KUGLER KOPS ANGOLA SUPERRO July 25, 2009
Stroh, Indiana veteran Mike Kugler took the lead on lap 44 and held off a late race charge by fast qualifier Jason Dietsch to win the SUPERPRO Series Engineered Systems 75 Presented by Penske Racing Shocks, Turbo Blue Racing Fuel and Corrigan Oil Saturday night at Angola Motor Speedway.
Ryan Inman and Kevin Todd brought the 20 car field to the green with Todd taking the early lead. Andy Marchiniak and Tom Smith moved around Inman for second and third on lap two. Marchiniak and Smith battled door to door the next 18 lap with Smith finally taking over second on lap 20. Kugler and Dietsch, who shared the fifth row on the starting grid, moved into third and fourth on lap 33.
At the half way mark, it was Todd, Smith, Kugler, Dietsch, Marchiniak, Al Cook, Jr., Jack Landis, Tommy Cook, Steven Brooks, and leading rookie of the year contender Kyle Hayden. Kugler moved past Smith on lap 42 for second and two laps later grabbed the lead from Todd. As Kugler gained a comfortable advantage, Dietsch began to make his charge. He grabbed third on lap 58 and a lap 59 caution for a Scott Medlen spin erased the big lead and brought Todd and Dietsch to Kugler's bumper. Dietsch took second on lap 61 and battled with Kugler for the lead the remainder of the race. A battle for twelfth between Mark Hankowsky, Matt Hall, Jim Weber, Medlen and Inman created some anxious moments the last two laps for Kugler as he approached the five cars that were still in the lead lap. Kugler was able to hang on for the win followed by Dietsch, Todd, Smith and Marchiniak. Landis was sixth followed by Al Cook, Jr., Tommy Cook, Hayden and Brooks. Dietsch was the Aluminum Racing Products fast qualifier with a time of 14.569 seconds around the three-eighths mile paved oval. Hank Tewes made the Penske Racing Shocks "Shocking Move of the Race" , Hayden was the "Turbo Blue Racing Gas - Corrigan Oil Rookie of the Race" and Paul Freeland was awarded the Aluminum Racing Products Hard Luck certificate. Marchiniak and Brooks received the Randercar Racing Enterprises Race Awards and Kugler and Dietsch shared the AllStar Performance - Lane Automotive "Hard Charger" award. The SUPERPRO Series moved to Baer Field Speedway on Friday, August 7 for the running of the International Trucks and Engines Gold Cup 100. The USA Modifieds, Late Models and Mini Stocks will also be in action along with a gigantic fireworks display and truck parade. Spectator gates open at 5 pm with racing getting underway at 7:30 pm. For more information, go to the web at www.superproracing.com or www.baerfieldspeedway.net. The SUPERPRO family would like to extend thoughts and prayers to driver Kyle Hayden and his crew chief Tim Prebe on the loss of their grandfather and father on Saturday evening.
